The Symposium

  • Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History 500 8th Avenue Lewiston, ID, 83501 United States (map)

Central to Ancient Greek culture, the Symposium was a social and intellectual gathering of shared conversation, merriment, and wine, where each drinking vessel played a vital role in shaping the rhythm of the evening. This collection draws from historical pottery forms whose beauty and function transcend time, reimagining them in a contemporary context through locally and sustainably sourced timber that reflects the region’s diverse forestry and honors both ancient legacies and the organic nature of working green wood.

Unique to the collection is an elaborate and sequential process that allows the handles of each vessel to be carved from the body of the form itself, where no additional material is added. To achieve this, each piece is turned on the lathe with an excess of material that is meticulously carved away to reveal intricate handles. Following a final shaping, each form is ebonized with fire, detailed with concentrated red wine, and finished with multiple coats of varnish oil.

You are invited to experience these vessels not merely as objects, but as a renewed dialogue between past and present. Each piece embodies the transformation of material, of form, and of meaning, encouraging reflection on how tradition endures through reinvention. Together, these works echo the spirit of the Symposium: a shared space for contemplation, connection, and the enduring beauty and value of craft.
